Travelling Thru the Atlanta Area - HELP!!!!!!!
HELP!!!!!
I'm taking my boat over to Don (EuropeanAm) in Greenville, SC for service on Tuesday (Jan 10th) but need to get past Atlanta in an efficient manner. We'll be coming through Rome, GA and should arrive at I-75 near Cartersville about 9 a.m. EST. If all goes well, we should get to Don's about noon. Yes, I've accounted for the time change at the AL/GA line. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
Here are the ideas I've had - please help me decide based on your real-world knowledge of the conditions. Remember - I'll be towing a 20' Triton. We can either:
A) Turn South and take I-75 to I-285 to I-85 East and on to SC (Route 1 below) or
B) Turn Nouth and take I-75 to GA-20 and take it thru Canton, Cumming, and Sugar Hill to I-85 East (Route 2 below).
Thoughts? Problems on either route - road construction, traffic lights, etc? Thanks in Advance!!!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif

I've never taken hwy 20 all the way across, but I think taking the interstate route is the best. You should miss the worst traffic by hitting Atlanta around 10:00.
Good luck.

I live in Rome, work in Cartersville, and used to work in ATL. At that time of day the worst traffic you should him may be the Rome bypass, take I75 to either I285 to I85 or I75 straight to I85, stay off Hwy 20 as it's a combination of 2 and 3 lane roads and lots of red lights. You should have no problems in ATL that late in the day.

Thats what I would do.. As long as you don't go thru atlanta during rush hour. It will be faster. 20 will prolly be shorter but 20 is 2 lane all the way.
Re: Travelling Thru the Atlanta Area - HELP!!!!!!! (ReelDoc)
Go down to Atlanta and come up. You should be fine at 10 a.m. The highways around Atlanta are most 3 or 4 lanes wide.
The Highway 20 route will be pretty hilly. Nothing I'd want to do with a 20' boat.
Your biggest challenge will be Greenville. I would plan that route to stay on the highway as much as possible. I took my boat up there about 2 years ago to get a new motor put on and then had to go pick it up a couple days later. I relied on the GPS the first time. Took a different highway route the second.
Good luck and it it worth the drive. Peace of mind is priceless.

Re: Travelling Thru the Atlanta Area - HELP!!!!!!! (ReelDoc)
if your doing it after 9 am then your fastest by far is 75 then 285 ,then 85 north. you would take so long the other way...pasing all those towns and lights. expressway is 70 mph straight around. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
Re: Travelling Thru the Atlanta Area - HELP!!!!!!! (ReelDoc)
I never get on 285, take 75 South and then hit 85 North. I know a lady that drives from Cartersville (I75) to Pleasant Hill Rd (I85) for the past several years and she swears that she will never take I 285, always goes 75 straight to 85.
Good luck! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

I'd do the zig-zag......59 to Chattanooga then 75 S to 85......30 miles further but interstate all the way.........
You could take the scenic route, 59 to Chatt. then 75 to Knoxvegas, 40 to Asheville then 26 S....whew, I got tired just thinking about that drive

I guess I'm the opposite. If I'm only heading from 75 to 85, I'd take 285 almost every time.
Re: Travelling Thru the Atlanta Area - HELP!!!!!!! (BeeNix)
75- 285 to I 85 no construction on 85 between 285 and 85. Best bet is to take 85 to I 385 north in Greenville. Go right through down town Greenville 4 lights. Past Library and bear right onto Poinsett Highway. Get to the Cherrydale complex and take a right just past the Ingles' grocery store. Get in the left lane for state park rd. Third street on right Apopka drive. He's on the left.
Alternate route. 385 and get off at the North Pleasntburg, route 291 exit and follow 291 north to the Cherrydale area, take a right at Olive Garden onto State Park rd. About 2.5 Hours from I-85/285 junction. GA 20 isn't too bad just pick up 53 outside of Gainsville and take that to I 85 you'll go across the north end of Lanier.
