General Maintenance Questions
As a new owner of an old engine I have a few simple questions. I do not suspect any problems at all, I just want to get some idea about what to expect/do in the future. The engine is a rebuilt 1985 Johnson GT 150.
1) How often should I check and/or replace my spark plugs?
2) How often should I change the lower unit oil?
3) My VR is bad, and the manual talks about it as an "after market" part, therefore, I have no resources on how to change it out. Any help would be appreciated.
4) How often should I have the carbs cleaned? (Including high/mid/low jets)
5) Anything else I'm missing? (Boy, that's open ended, huh?)
Thanks guys!!!!!

Re: General Maintenance Questions (Stone)
1. I like once a year,
2. Every season, and I check often by pulling the prop for fishing line and things... that will cut seals and get water in the unit.
3. Vr I assume is Voltage regulator, and your not talking about VRO, which is the pump for the oil/gas mix.... Either are easy to do, Voltage Regulator is under the PP(Power pack) which is behind the flywheel....
4. Decarb should be done once a year, or more if you run it alot..... They sell engine tuner as it's called at the marinas that cary Bomb parts......
5. Fuel Filter should be once per year as well.... Congrats on your new motor and good luck! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif
Re: General Maintenance Questions (THE WITCHDOCTOR)
Great, thanks a ton for the feedback DR.
Yes, I was talking about the Voltage Regulator. It looks to me that it is under the fly wheel, which means I will probably have to pull the fly off, correct?
Thanks!
