pull cord rewind assembly

I jut bought a Johnson 4 seahorse kicker motor. my son was trying to start it and it started. then the next time he started it he pulled the cord out and it would not go in again. i took the assembly apart and saw that the spring was broke, and it completly unwond on the way out. Ive bought a new spring for the rewind assembly im not sure which way to bend it to rewind it. any help at all that would better my situation would be awesome.
