Look up above this post at the "Repair Stuff" post pinned to the top of this board. It has good pictures and should be a big help to you. I'd suggest getting the kit and doing everything.

The second entry in the repair tips sticky is a link to doing this on a Merc, very similar to the Yamaha. Pay attention to what it says about aligning the shift rod and the drive shaft when reinstalling the LU. Personally, I prefer to put the engine in gear before I start and am careful not to change it at the LU as I work. When reinstalling, I can hold the LU in position with one hand and wiggle the prop with the other to wiggle the drive shaft into alignment.
Be sure to torque the bolts correctly at the WP (get an inch-pound torque wrench) and where the LU bolts to the motor.
If you will do your own routine maintenance and simple repairs, a Yamaha Service Manual is a <u>good</u> investment.

Ahhh. I have a 2000 Yamaha 115 V4. Just had the 3rd water pump installed
