SHO "Blown" During Break in results

I posted in another thread (Attention all SHO owners) regarding my SHO blowing up during break in and literally just got off the phone with my dealer and the computer returned the throttle positioning indicator...not sure if that is what yamaha actually calls it because this is my first yamaha but I am very familiar with the TPI on mercs.

So the good news is the motor is not blown. At the time I called they were still on the phone with yamaha and did not have a date for the part for me yet. Hopefully get to test Saturday and get it back to normal. Wish nothing was wrong but if something had to be I guess this is probably one of the better things that could have happened. When it happened I just assumed the worse...human nature I guess.

Definately a "first day" that I will never forget.

The SHO is a "fly by wire" system and basic throttle control has 2 (redundant, cross checking) APS (Accelerator Position Sensors)... Main and sub CPUs... ETV (Electronic Throttle Valve)...and (2 redundant, cross checking) TPS (Throttle Position Sensors

So you see that there is a lot going on when you step on the gas!

I am sure the fix will be minor in nature and you will be good to go again!

Sounds like the space shuttle with all that redundancy going on. Joking aside, since you seem to know the system well, I fished with a fellow from Texas last year on Wheeler and a few times that he mashed on it pretty hard coming out of the hole, his stumbled a bit but would recover. I really wouldn't have noticed it if he had not mentioned that it was happening. What would have caused that? Otherwise the SHO ran flawlessly and I honestly believe if it weren't for all the torque that engine has, we would have not made weigh-in on time as we battling at times 4 footers being stood up by the wind against Wheeler's almost constant current a few miles above the Decatur flats!

good deal, hate that your out of a boat...even more so since it's a brand new rig. It sounds like they got you moving in the right direction and glad it wasn't anything serious. Keep us posted on progress and the final verdict and resolution to the problem.

I miss spoke earlier and said that it was the TPS. After I talked with my dealer, Yamaha changed their mind and had them replace the whole ECM....what they are calling the computer. Again I am SHO/Yamaha illiterate...Went to water test Friday after work and it jumped and lurched and died and....it was bad. It was getting dark so we put it back on the trailer and looked at it again first thing Saturday. It did not code when put on the computer, THANK GOD, and I was digging around in my back compartment and happened to find that the gas line was bent in a 90 degree angle coming off of the bulb. Unbent it and away we went. I hit 70 tonight for the first time before running out of real estate....I think my motor may be bolted too low on the jack plate, with the gauge reading 18 out of 21 is my best hole shot and even running it wide open with plate all the way up and trimmed all the way up I still have 15-17 water psi. On top of that I can't get this Triton to walk so I know there has to be more in it.

Glad they got you fixed up. Mine runs high water pressure as well, they have low water pick ups so they can run higher and still maintain water pressure, mine is at 2 3/4 below the pad and I am between 18 and 20 psi at WOT. None of us are experts on this motor and it's a learning curve to say the least. Might want to ask the dealer that set up your boat if he can mount the engine a little higher on the plate to give you a little more room for adjustment.

I'm at 1" below pad and going up from there. I'm ordering a Hyd. JP. YOu right about the WPSI on the SHO's and HPDI's too. I've got a friend with a BassCat Puma/HPDI he's at level pad. Same holds true from my SHO benchmarks. At 1" below pad I'm at 18-20 PSI.
