Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
It's covered under warranty I'd take it authorized yamaha dealer and let them look at it.
What position was your motor in when you checked the dip stick? http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
I would not run the motor until the oil has been changed. That oil has been compromised with what ever it is that is extra in the oil.....
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
Get it to a shop. And get that bad oil out of there. Do not extract it from the top, completely drain it from the bottom, it is contaminated with gasoline.
Re: 250 SHO (bassfinder1)
I have ordered 7 quarts of the new synthetic oil and an oil filter. I will completely drain everything out and get it changed.
Yeah $110 later. This is BS since I just had the oil changed a few months ago.
I am running a 25 t1 getting about 6100 rpms. Running it hard is BS! Trust me I run the shiat out of it. She has not blown http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/roll.gif
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
Oh one more thing. The dealer said even though it takes 7 quarts to only put 6 in and run it for 5 minutes, then tilt the motor all the way up for a few minutes and then back down level before checking the level.
He said there are so many areas for the oil to be in the motor that you might have a quart or so in there that has not come out. We will see............
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
If you have any questions about your engine feel free to im me. Please keep a close eye on the oil level the gas is not good. I strongly suggest taking it to the dealer and have them check out where the fuel is coming from though that is a lot of fuel. GOOD LUCK http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
Re: 250 SHO (bassfinder1)
Thanks. I have a few guide trips so I have to have my boat. I am gonna change it out and keep a close eye on it. It it starts getting more in it I will take it in.
I do have one question. Is it easy to get to the drain plug. I was told it is on the starboard side at the bottom and to look for a couple allen screws.
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
Remove the cover on the starboard side, held on by several allen heads. The drain plug will be at the bottom of the powerhead. The oil will come out straight sideways at first, be ready for it. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
Holy Chit I pulled 8 1/2 quarts of oil out of my SHO! WTF!
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
When I drained mine @ 17hrs I got 9.2 qts. I can only imagine what kind of damage we have done internally to our SHO motor running contaminated oil. Thankfully I have 6 yrs of warranty because at this point I have no doubt we are going to need it!! My fishing partner gets a real good laugh when we get ready to go fishing and I have to syphon oil out of my $20k motor. LOL. Keep a real close check after each trip to see if and when it starts growing oil. You will need to let it set for a couple of hours to let all the oil settle to get an acurate reading. Did you fill it half way between high and low level mark on dip stick when you changed it?? I have been told by a Yamaha Test Facility Tech that is where we need to start oil level after a fresh change. Last time I put a calculator to it I believe my 4 stroke is costing a hell of a lot more for oil than HPDI !! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/roll.gif
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
Thst's not a surprise to me. Regardless of the attempts by some on here to steadfastly maintain that the SHO does not have any problems, some of these engines do indeed have a serious problem with oil contamination by fuel. That is why I suggessted you get it to a shop - the problem needs to be found, documented and corrected. You will shorten the life of the engine with gasoline laden oil in it.
Re: 250 SHO (stratos201evolution)
There are only two substances entering the engine as it runs - air and gasoline. So if we can agree that it is physically impossible for any engine to "make oil", then the rising oil level has to be from contamination, either by air or gas. The air thing won't Fly, pun intended. Therefore there is no doubt that gasoline is getting past the rings and mixing with the oil. As each week passes more and more folks post here that they are having this problem with their SHO, so there is no doubt in my mind that there is an unresolved issue with SOME of these engines. Some of them don't have this problem apparently, which makes the whole subject matter interesting. As Yamaha is not about to publicly admit this problem for fear of hurting sales, it may be a long time before there is any definitive answer to the cause of the problem, although one Yamaha certified master tech has posted some potential causes.
