I am thinking of buying a 90 etec - but would like to hear from those
who own or have ridden in a boat with one
1. has the cold-water problem been cured
2. noise level
anything else
Thanks

Welcome to the BBC.
Some of the guys here are running 90 E-Tec's and will be by to let you know what they think. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
My fishin buddy has one on the back of his alumacraft . Instant starts, runs quiet , good acceleration ,and he has had it a year now with no troubles at all.........
See:

for information on an installation of twin 90-HP E-TEC motors.
Nice write up and a neat video! That Whaler literally jumps up on plane. Were you using the 17 or 19 pitch prop for that run? Impressive!! http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

One of my guys at the shop has a 1860 Sea Ark w/90 E-tec, it runs the best with a 17 pitch prop. No cold water problems here, but it was 86 deg. today. When the engine is rigged, the dealer ship will install the newest map to stop the cold water issues. 2006 engines should already have all the issues taken care of.
That's my Whaler with the twin 90's. I had her out a few miles in Lake Michigan on Saturday, surface temperature was 38 degrees, steam coming from the exhaust. No problems. The motors are 2006 model year, and the dealer updated the firmware before they were started for the first time two weeks ago....so they have the very latest updates on them.
Overall, couldn't be happier...you should definitely consider these motors if you are in the market for 90 HP power. I couldn't be much happier.
Regards.
What kind of boat are you going to put it on? mines a 75(almost the 90,same block) on a 16 deep V pushes it just over 40 with a light load. Idles pretty smooth is very quiet and sips gas and oil.Mines a o5 and used it twice last year at 35 degrees to start the day and never had a problem with the warning buzzer.
This is the first I am hearing about the cold water problem. I have an '05 75 E-Tec. Does this same issue apply to that model? Do I need to visit the dealer as a precaution for an update or is this something that is intermittent and I should wait to see if I have a problem first?
I have read on C-BRATS forum that the 90 has a cold weather problem
with the oil buzzer because it does not get warm enough in cold water
They did not mention the 75 hp
My Boat is a 17WT Tracker Targa - it currently has a Mercury Classic 90hp on it and it will barely do 40 mph
Do you think the 90 etec would push it faster

If you check out the whole story, that was a 2 year old motor, without any updates, and a "marginal" dealer service dept. It is doing fine now.
I've run an 05- 75E-TEC the last 2 winters down on the Niagara River(never freezes)..she doesn't get much colder then that!! No problems or issues with the motor, runs like a dream, even in extreme cold....... Al P.
