115hp 2 stroke.....2005........questions and concerns
I am a little concerned that the boat I am looking to get has a Yamaha 115hp 2 stroke.
Its a 2005 motor, it was sold at the dealer, had one owner and serviced in house the whole time (older gentleman owned it, lucky if he put 30hrs a year on it).
I am juts concerned because around that 5 year mark is when motors start to hit the fan? Is this true? Can the motor not need to be rebuilt if treated properly?
Is this engine reliable? Any known issues?
Any help is appreciated........ http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif

The 115 V-4 is a VERY solid motor. There are only a handful of outboards out there that I would classify as bulletproof ...... and this motor is one of them.
I've NEVER heard of motors blowing just b/c they are 5yrs old. EVERY outboard motor I've ever owned was either purchased +5yrs old, or kept long after it passed 5 yrs old and the ONLY one I had to blow was 3yrs old. It's now 20yrs old (well minus 3yrs, LOL) this year and going strong.
As far as what needs to be done with this motor ....... I'd get a compression check before buying ..... if everything checks out within 10% on all 4 cylinders ....... and you buy it ....... put new spark plugs in it ....... possibly put a new water pump in it ........ change the lower unit oil ......... go fish (as soon as ya'll's water becomes soft again http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif ).

I just went through the powerhead on my 99 130 which is the same motor. I purchased it with a blown powerhead and it had over 500 hrs on it. The cause was extended use with a leaking head gasket. If the gasket had been replaced it would not have wore out a few of the cylinders. These motors are very overbuilt.
FWIW if your head gasket is weeping on the outside, its probably leaking on the inside.

Those are great motors! That should only be a + if your buying it,and as long as it's been halfway taken care of you won't go wrong. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

I had a 92 130 for 16 years. The 115 is the same V4 powerhead just tuned down a bit. When I sold it the engine ran just like it did when I bought it. I miss the simplicity of the carb motor vs. my HPDI. The carb YamahaÂs are some of the best OBÂs ever built! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
