Re: ????? 1987 Yamaha 150 (packfan)
Assuming that basic maintenence has been done over the years, Water Pump, Themostats, lower unit, and basic care.
These motors are rock solid!
I have a 1988 115 Yama, that runs like a champ. Use it year round. This high usage is probably why it still runs. These motors like to run, don't like to sit up with very little use. If the compression checks out, i would make an offer. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif
Re: ????? 1987 Yamaha 150 (basinmaster)
Thanks for the input. The guy is pretty meticulous and the thing looks great on the outside so I am putting some faith in him that the maintenance has been done. I know it was this summer.
Im gonna bite the bullet and get it most likely. I have had OMC's all my life but have always heard pretty good things about the old Yami's!!!!

Looks like my 115. Also looks like it was well taken care of.
Did you buy it?

Re: ????? 1987 Yamaha 150 (wildkat7)
It is mine..... It is just as clean under the hood also. Compression was +/- 3 across them all from 117-120 on a warmed up motor.
Any Idea what it will push an 17'10" ranger to (1200lbs)? I'm guessing around 60.
Re: ????? 1987 Yamaha 150 (packfan)
i have a ranger 188vx, 18 foot 8 inch with a 150 vmax and a 23 pitch prop and ran 58-59 gps at first but with new heads and carb jets from hydrotech, it will run 63 with just me, so yours should run 60 or more depending on motor height, load, prop etc,.
Re: ????? 1987 Yamaha 150 (packfan)
My 1990 Yamaha 150 pushes my 18' Ranger 61.8 GPS with a 23p 4 blade prop and a 6" jackplate. (has a little cup in the prop tips) It too is all original.
Keep the carbs clean, run Ringfree and Marine Sta-bil in every tank, and it may just last forever. These 2.6L 150 Yamaha motors were as bullet proof as any motor ever built. You got one hell of a deal! I wouldn't sell my motor for $3500. It runs as good and fast as anything built now days and it costs me almost nothing in maintenance. A water pump every couple years, lower unit oil twice a year, and new plugs once or twice a year and you're good to go. As long as you pump the primer bulb good on the first start of the day, the fuel pumps will probably last you 4 years. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Now that is what I like to hear. Thanks! I feel, like I got a decent deal as I have been looking almost a year. Been a OMC guy but just because that is what was on the boats. The guy had the carbs rebuilt this summer. He had the lower unit oil changed also but I am going to do that anyway. Any "magic" lower unit oil you Yami guys recommend?
Re: ????? 1987 Yamaha 150 (packfan)
Any decent name brand Marine gear lube will work. I know a lot of the guys on here recommend Royal Purple or Yamalube.

I have a friend who had a stratos for 20 years with this engine and he never had a problem with it. they are great engines
