Went and looked at mine. It has the slot pointing to 3C/6P. I did the same thing as you on rotating it back and forth. Also checked all the connections of which some were loose. Tach would jump up in rpms and if I reached under and moved the wires it would settle back down. Now it holds very steady. Hope this helps
I just hooked my engine up to the hose and started the engine. After it warmed up, I moved the setting until I found one that read about 750 RPMs. I couldn't see the set screw on the gauge because it was still mounted in the dash and I was using a 12" screwdriver. But I guess I found the correct setting.
