Steering cable lube???

I have mostly only had hydraulic steering,,a few with cables but i never took them off till now,,On an 86 yammy pro -v dual cable setup ,,the front has a grease fitting the back one does not,,i took them off since the steering felt a lil tight and needless to say they was both packed with grease,the back one without the zerk was really nasty.Someone once told me to not put grease in there but to use a liquid like wd-40 is this what needs to be done or maybe water resisitant grease n the front one?????I havent hooked them back up yet but they do seem a whole lot smoother with no grease.. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/bows.gif

Clean out the tubes as best you can, a 12ga shotgun cleaning brush and rod mounted in a drill motor will help. Spraying engine degreaser in the tubes will help. It's very important to get them clean as different greases do not mix. Once very clean, use waterproof grease or an oil if you wish. Do not use WD40, it is a water displacer, not an oil.

I just bought a cable buddy system that touts that it contains best lubricant for sterring cables. Once i installed it the oil smells and looks like plain old gear lube to me. Havent had the boat out since the install so dont really know how well it works.
