2005 200HPDI - fuel related problem
Motor has always run fine but last time out would not start. Believe its a fuel problem and have read the topic on how to change the filter inside the VST. One noticeable difference is when the key is turned to the on position (not trying to start) you normally here a pump noise kick on for 5-10 seconds. Sound seems to be coming from the VST. I am not currently getting that sound when the key is turned on.
Anyone have a suggestion or had experience with a similar problem?

Get you a fuel gauge and connect to the schneider valve on top of the vst. When you turn the key on you should have a reading of 50 psi (plus or minus a little bit). You do don't then you have to start to trouble shoot on why the pump is not running or the pressure is not in the 50 psi range.
Hope you still have warranty because that pump is about $700.00 if it is bad plus labor if you don't do it your self.

Could check fuel pump relay or wiring harness Sometimes the electric fuel pump is hard to hear. How many hours?

When you turn the key to on (but don't start) do you have your kill switch attached?
I changed out my fuel pump relay when i thought it was bad... i then noticed if the kill switch isn't on the fuel pump won't run when you turn on the ignition. I know what you mean it's that 10 seconds it takes to pressurize the vst canister with fuel.
I had issues last year where the motor would run until it ran out of gas because it seemed the fuel pump wasn't being told to run. We tested everything from loose/broken wires, fuel pump relay, fuel pump.. etc... but didn't find anything wrong. After reseating everything it's run fine the last two times out... uggh
I'll have to wait till spring to see if this re-occurs... i have a new relay so that'll get switched out if the issue comes back... fun fun fun....
If you don't hear the pump run you may have a bad realy which is behind a plate on the back of the motor.. it's about $80. To get to it you have to remove the plastic covers, and the plate itself... you'll see 2-3 black modules screwed to the back plate the smallest one on the top is the relay.

SkeeterJohn - thanks for the info. yes - the clip is in the kill switch (laynard) and I have had the switch tested.
I'm not sure where the relay is and can't figure it out thru on line parts web sites / drawings.
Can you assist? Is the relay inside the CDI unit or the junction box on the starboard side?

On the back of the engine you have to remove the ignition coil cover, then the bracket that holds the injector drivers and the fuel pump relay is behind that plate on the starboard side about mid way down from the flywheel

If you go here it's part number 46

Here's a picture too... you have a lot of bolts to remove to get to it but it's easy enough to do.
