Need Advice on Newly Bought Boat Engine MPH Ranger Reata 1850RS Yamaha 150/4 Str

Hi All,
New to Bass Boat Central,

Just bought a new 2009 Ranger Reata 1850RS with Yamaha 150 4 stroke.

I went thru two hours of break in today and then after that I ran for about 3 minutes at top speed...

I could only get to 34 MPH.

We had myself 250 another guy 220 and a boy 130 and a full tank of gas.

I am so so happy with this boat just wondering if someone can give me advice on why it is not in the 40's for MPH.......

What rpm are your turning at full throttle and full trim? Also, what prop are you running? According to the Yamaha Performance Bulletin on your boat/motor combination, you should be near 50 in the upper 5k rpm with a Yamaha Pro Series 21 pitch prop.

Well went in buddys boat today found out I was 10MPH to low due to not being trimmed all the way---tks for the help alot...

Follow your break in recommendations. I wouldn't be pushing it until at least 10 hrs. What does you book say is OK at only 2 hrs??

Trimming it up will help quite a bit. What kind of RPM was it turning?

The OM for my F225 says after the first 2 hours, you can run it at any RPM range you choose, but says not to leave it at full throttle for more than 5 minutes at a time. After 10 hours, it's fully broken in.

According to this performance bulletin on Yamaha's website, that combo should be good for almost 50mph.

My OM stepped me through the first few minutes, then the next hour, then the next two hours, then limits up through 10 hours. I corrected my post above to 10hrs, I think I had 19 at first.

The 225 on the back of our 211 is probably worth more than the rest of the boat combined. We have our 10 hours on it, and I'm comfortable seeing what she'll do now, but man, have a little patience. It can save you a lot of heart ache.

These motors have memory, and if you blow one, the manufacturer will know EXACTLY how it was run. Could void the warranty if you don't follow break in.

Ranger Rodney stressed that to us when we purchased from him. He didn't win Dealer of the year by not knowing his stuff. Doesn't sound like he was pushing the breakin specs to me.

I've got 57 hours on my F225 now since it was new in mid-June. And I've run it full tilt for a few longish runs, but I don't like to. I'm an old gear head and have trouble running any motor at max RPM for extended periods. Just makes those dollar signs start popping up in my brain. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif

At 2 hours, my manual said I could go full throttle "only to get on plane", then keep to 3000-4000 rpms.

He will be at 10 hrs in no time.....

I have been following specs and you guys are awesome however my darn speedometer is broke and my dealer tells me Yamahas just clog up all the time with garbage oh well after one month to shop tomorrow and not happy about it.
Have had way too many problems so far no cool hub is gone on one side...

I've not had any issues with my F225 clogging the intakes. But the lakes and rivers I've had it on are pretty clear water. I did get some weeds around the propeller shaft up north in a weedy lake, but it didn't cause any issues.

But I hear you on the new boat frustrations. Mine has to go back to Skeeter so they can install a new windshield, so not looking forward to being w/o it.

I have a F115 on my saltwater boat and it came with a 19 inch pitch. When I ran it with just me on it 200#s and a half tank of fuel I was pushing almost 50 mph. I ran the boat again with a full tank of fuel and two more folks putting the weight at 600 #s and it took forever to get the boat on plane. I changed the prop to a 17 inch pitch and lost 10 mph but have no problem getting it up on plane. If you run your boat with just you on it and still does the same thing you need to take it to the dealer you bought it from. Our engines are fuel injected and any little build up of particles in the injectors will affect the engine performance. The F150 is a great engine and is almost bulletproof don't give up on it yet!

LOL should have been working funny it seemed like it would have been better working than taking my boat to the shop......Couple days and I am hopeful we are back in business and I can finally catch some fish-----On a postive note caught two dink sandbasses so I have broke the boat in so to speak----you guys have awesome help
