Just bought a nice champ with a 175 merc efi. Good compression across all 6 cylinders. Turns a 25 trophy to 5600 rpms and jumps out of the hole. Seems to be a strong engine. I am torn as whether to remove the oil injection system and premix or not. I found out from a local mechanic it would cost me a $125.00 to remove it. Anyone do it with a efi and what were the results. Of course Don's opinion will be valued, thanks.
If it's working good as it sounds like it is, why remove it ? I'd leave it alone.

Removal of the oil injection system is actually quite simple... provided that you purchase an appropriate (Mercury) blockoff kit.
Those are quite inexpensive... Sherm @ Sherm's Marine (or we) keep them on hand.
Personally, I prefer to RETAIN the oil injection system, and properly maintain it.
Proper maintenance would include (at least):
-Use of appropriate, high-grade oils (Mercury or Quicksilver Premium Plus would be a good choice)
-Regular Inspection (at least annually) of the pickup screen, and all oil lines.
-REPLACE any clear oil lines that become hard, brittle, cracked, or "opaque".
-Keep up with WATER PUMP replacement (annually is wise in a fishing application- many oil pump failures can be attributed to overheating the engine). :wink:
Thanks for the advice. I will certainly change the water pump. I will get those lines checked out and replaced if necessary.
Iron banks...I have a '96 175Xri on my '92 PRoCraft 180 and the oil system has been flawless. It's been a great engine for years just use Quality oil and follow Don's maintenance inspections. I prefer to use 92+ octane fuel and quikleen/star-tron and things have been good as this engine's been on my Pro for 15 years of hard use.
It`s a good system I`d leave it on.
