Don't have any tips but take pictures while in the process and post on here. I want to learn how to do mine instead of paying $150.

In the "Super Tips" section there is an article by Sherm, which covers this topic very well. This particular article is referenced to a Mercury lower unit, but the Yamaha and Merc L/U's are very similar.

Here's the link to Sherm's water pump article.

Easy job. If you are mechanically minded it will be no problem. The only tricky part is getting the snap cap off without tearing it up. If you get a new one with a pump kit just break the old one off and its a quick job..

Ok everybody I know this is old but when I was researching information on changing out my water pump I came across this. In the exploded view in the link what part is the "snap cap"?

And I have a 2005 200 Yamaha 200 HPDI so any other information on changing the water pump will be greatly appreciated.

That would be item 30 and 31. Getting that cap off is no big deal, if you take two screw drivers and put under the lip of item 31 and just work it up and off of item 30. They are both plastic and will come off easy. Look at this it is the third picture down.

Re: Yamaha Water Pump How to? (rangerguy)
Thanks for the help. It looks like a fairly easy job. Besides the impeller is there anything else I should replace? Should I have any gaskets or anything else ready so I can complete the job at one time?
Update: I spoke to my local dealer and they were suggesting I buy the kit which is $80. If I buy the parts seperated they quoted me $31.95 for the impeller and $9.00 for the gasket. Should I spend the extra $40 to get the kit?

Buy the Kit and everything you will need is in the kit. That way there will be no surprises when you tear her down. You will have everything to put it back together. If you buy just the impeller and gasket, and find you need the "O" rings, cup or plate, then you will end up buying the kit anyway and spending $120=$80 + $40 instead of $80 and then have a extra impeller and gasket and be down while the kit comes in.
