Newbie cooling question Saltwater Series 130

I have recently purchased an Edgewater with a 1999 Yamaha Saltwater Series 130 outboard. I had it tuned up last week my local yard and they told me everything was OK. I wanted to do a bit of pre-launch testing in my yard - and this is my first outboard so i'm getting used to the primer bulb,etc. I have a single sided water cooling muff and i attached that to the lower half intake. I started my engine up and let it idle for about 2-3 minutes and I got the high temp alarm. I did shut right down and all is ok. On my engine there are two areas that look like intake - one low just above the prop shaft with a fine grate - and one a bit higher over the stabalizer fin with larger openings. My muff fits onto the lower part - should i be using the upper opening instead? I got no water flowing thru the pee hole at all. Which of these intake grates should i be flushing with - and am i wasting my time with the single sided water flush muff?

I have never seen a one sided muff set. The lower intakes righ above the prop shaft below the cavatation plate are he proper ones, but both have to covered for it to be forced induction from the hose. If yyou don't have a pee stream, then

1.) it isn't hooked up correctly

2.) your impeller or just complete water pump needs to be replaced $75-$150 at a shop.

3.) You have an obstruction in the pee tube, which is easy to fix if you know what to look for.

4.) your thermostats are shot??? No real familiar with this though myself. I had this go wrong on my frist boat years ago on a 75hp merc and it cost me about $700 but I think I was had? http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif

The water only flows in on one side - but it slips onto both sides. Not sure if i am making a good enough seal.

No you are correct, the water would only come from one side of the muff, but since the muff seals there withe the suction cuffs, it is the same as both sides getting water, since they are in an open channel. It sounds as if your water pump is bad. I would take it to a local ramp and try it ON the trailer before fully launching. If it is bad I would take it to the shop that said everything is fine and say " Hey is it supposed to make this beep, because my gut instincts says no, and since you gave me the okay to launch it, can you explain it to me..." And then demand they fix it for your troubles....

Serisouly water pump replace to them is only like 1/2 hr time and $30..... But to you $75-$150... Depends on location.
