40 horse etec on a 95 lund rebel 16ft??
I currently own the above boat, the unit is only rated for a 45 horse motor. I am looking at the 40 etec. I have a 30 horse johnson 2 stroke on the boat currently does anyone have any ideas if the extra 10hp will get me to 30+ mph? Or should I go with the 50hp (yikes) the two motors weigh the same, and I know the 50 will get me where I need to be. However I doubt that I can insure my boat if I put a 50ph on it. Shall I just punt and buy a bigger boat, or can I get away with what I have. Any input will be greatly appreciated. By the way we still have 23 inches of ice up here in the great northwoods, and the crappies are biting!!

How fast are you going now? generally you pick up 3-4 mph for every 10 hp increase. Yours may be different as I believe those boats only have a 5 or 600 lb. hull, a 40 etec should get you 30 but going to a rig that handles a 75-90 hp motor would fish and ride better (a deep Vee vs your shallow vee)

Shallow v 525 lbs. I only go 25 by myself, I weigh 200 lbs, but when I put another guy my size in the boat we only go 17mph. Load with gear for a three day trip in Voyagers park I only push 10 or 11. I guess I am looking for a happy medium that may not exist. Speed and then power, I know I will not get on plane when loaded, but I expected to go faster than I was. I like the small boat for some of the smaller lakes, and questionable landings that I have to use. However 17 mph with another body in the boat just isn't enough. I am not expecting to fly but I would like to be able maximize speed with the rig I currently own, and a 4-stroke for me is out of the question. Thanks for the advice have a good one.

Welcome to the BBC.
The E-Tec should get you some speed and you will use less fuel and oil.
