Well, the motor cranks fine but idles rough like its missing. It smokes a lot more than it used to and has no power under load. When I take off, it goes up to 2000 rpm and will stall out a few seconds later. It has new plugs and that's about it. Could this be a major problem occurring?

could be. BUt i had that same motor and had the same problem. Turned out my fuel lines were clogged. Check and change your fuel lines and your fuel filter http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Start with the BASICS:
-Compression Test
-Spark Test (including appropriate, clean, fresh spark plugs)
-Fuel Quality and Delivery Tests.
If no specific problems are noted in the above tests, I would highly recommend reading through the following post, and addressing ALL recommended items AT THE SAME TIME:

My motor was doing the same as yours. It was water in the fuel. ( damn gas station.) $550 later it runs like a champ.
That was my first thought when it started doing this. I switched tanks and idled around for 45min in an attempt to clean the engine out with negative results. I even drained one of the tanks and tried fresh gas with the same result. I'm hoping that it is a simple fuel starvation issue.
If it is smoking alot more, not likely to be a starvation issue, but maybe a rich condition.... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
UPDATE - I picked up the boat from the shop Thursday. The issue was a bad switchbox. Took it out to the lake today and it ran like a blue ribbon champ!
