The manual shows Perfect Seal added to the plastic housing where it mates with the upper gasket. Mine shows no evidence of ever having any sealant on it and the local Merc Tech said he doesn't use any. I'm replaceing a torn upper gasket, should I add a sealer or put it back together dry? Thanks. 2.5 Sportmaster lower unit.
What Mr. Don Weed @ European Marine was the "Perfect Seal" comes in large quantities and said I could use Indian Head Gasket Shellac Compound http://www.amazon.com/Permatex...KLOG6 which I found at NAPA or Autozone. So that is what I used when it called for "Perfect Seal....but I don't remember mine calling for it on the plastic housing just under the metal gaskets.

Since the old gasket had no sealer and blew out on one side I wonder if it does need some gasket dope. The service manual shows it between the housing and the top gasket only, no where else in the pump assy exploded view.

The factory didn't use any when they assembled the water pump in my '09 150 Opti so I didn't use any when replacing the pump housing & impeller. IMO, if you don't over torque the fasteners holding the housing you should have no problems with your gaskets. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

With the plastic lower water pump base, it is usually NOT necessary to utilize sealant.
Stack everything up correctly, and torque the NUTS for the water pump body to 50 inch pounds. NOTE: That's INCH POUNDS. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
