You dont need to. You WILL need a longer throttle cable to install the Hotfoot but its not a big deal. What i did was disconnect it at the motor and leave it connected at the trottle that way if your thottle cable ever needs to be hooked back up it already right there.
You will definitely need a longer cable (as above stated) for use on the Hotfoot.
Although I've seen the throttle cable disconnected from the engine end, and left somewhere inside the back of the boat, I'm not too fond of the "moving cable left loose somewhere" routine (if it were to bind, or interfere with something in it's path- it could potentially cause difficulty shifting- or even PREVENT you from shifting).
The BEST means is to remove the rear module from the control, and disconnect/remove the cable at BOTH ends.
JMHO....
How do you remove the rear module?
-Place throttle control in FORWARD position.
-CAREFULLY pry out the "Throttle Only" button. Don't panic if it breaks- this happens sometimes (not too expensive)
-Place control handle in NEUTRAL position.
-Remove BOLT that retains handle.
-Remove surround covers from faceplate
-Remove three (3) screws in center portion of mounting plate that retain rear module to mounting plate
-Carefully slide control module to gain access.
-Note: Most models require a spacer be installed to fill the void where the throttle cable previously went through case (this ensures proper alignment of the shift cable)
-When reassembling, utilize BLUE LIQUID LOCTITE on all retaining bolts removed above.
