That type of system is a pressurized oil system. If there is ANY air leak in the system it will not transfer to the engine oil tank. It uses crankcase pressure to air up the tank in the boat and force oil to the tank under the cowl. I would check the tightness of the cap on the tank in the boat. If you have remote oil fill i would make sure the clamps are very tight on the fill hose and make sure the deck fill cap isnt leaking. Soapy water with the engine running tends to help find an air leak. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
I have seen a bad check valve on the pressure hose where it attaches to the engine block, which causes no oil flow from the boat tank to the motor res.
Also, there is a filter on the bottom of the pickup in the oil tank in boat. Make sure it is clean and free of gel. Mixing different brands have a tendency to gel up
+1 to all of the above.
Would also recommend you read through the following post:

will try all of the above. Thanks for the input guys!
to remove the oil pickup tube where the filter is located, do I remove the four screws on the unit where the hose and wires go on top of tank?
Thanks,
Al
On the oil tank in boat. Find the oil supply hose and remove the cap. The filter is on the bottom of the pickup tube
Sorry, did not see that this was a Mercury section... Mine is a Johnson 1993 200hp. I am sure the oil resivors are different in the boat.
Thanks anyway... http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/embarassed.gif
They also have a flat filter in the bottom of the oil tank that is a flat filter. Yes remove the screws. Good luck on the RUDE board. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
