How common is it for a Tachometer to break? Started up my boat and noticed mine isnt giving a read :( Hooked a meter up to the wires and it is pulsing. Just want to make sure its definitely broken before I go and drop the money on the a new one. Got any ideas on things to check before I buy a new one?

Could also be your voltage regulators etc.. Look for burned/melted bullet connectors.

I dont even know where to start to look for other problems. Would just hate to buy a new Tach is thats not the problem.
look under the dash at the back of the tach, there should be a small "pot" with an arrow on it, note where it's set at now, then take a small flat head screw driver and rotate the "pot" back and forth a couple times, set it back to where it was originally and see if it's working right again, most of the time that's the issue.
I'll give that a try Saturday when I take the boat out. What would cause that to fix the issue?

Be careful that you DO NOT ROTATE THE POT SWITCH all the way around (stop at 1-2 positions).
Sometimes, corrosion builds up on the contacts in these switches, resulting in no operation (or irratic operation). http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
I have this one I removed from my '09 150 Opti when I converted to MercMonitor this past spring. It is a Merc tach and is just collecting dust. Let me know if you're interested.

x2. I fixed a tach this way in the past.
That didnt fix it :( Anything else worth trying?
Check to make sure you have 12V+ power on the "I" terminal (purple wire), and 12V- (ground) on the "G" terminal (black wire).
If the above are true- more than likely your tach has failed.
