Optimax Air Compressor Failure
Don, Since I now own a 200 hp Optimax, I try to keep abreast of all possible failures and ways to prevent the failures from happening. I just re-read your thread "Optimax Compressor Failures vs. Oil Used vs. Cooling Issues: http://www.bbcboards.net...-used". I didn't see any mention of removal of the cooling water strainer to the compressor and checking for restrictions or blockage. On another site a guy posted that he had had 2 compressor failures and since he has started removing and cleaning the strainer he hasn't had any failures. My question is do you think this should be performed during normal maintenance?

There's certainly no harm in cleaning the strainer as part of your regular maintenance schedule.
However.... keeping an eye on the telltale stream (and noting any substantial changes in the strength or volume of the stream) will often clue you in to a strainer that's in need of attention. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
