Mercury Mystery....Still blowing our minds!!!!!!!!
Ok folks, we are still working on the 3.0L 225. I didn't have anyway to lift the power head, so I took it back to the guy in Cleveland. He has a hoist. He pulled the power head and cleaned the exhaust. It was solid!!! Took a drill bit to break thru it. Finally got it cleaned. Put it back together and took it to the lake. He said it took off like a new engine!!!! Got up to 70 like it was on cruise control. For about 3 miles. RPM's started dropping, losing power. Got it back to the ramp and loaded it. Checked the CDMs, #6 wasn't firing. All others were firing just fine. He was working on another boat, too, so he let it set fro a while. Went back to it and checked #6 again and it was firing. He put it back in the water, and again it took off like nothing was wrong. Ran for about a mile, and started shutting down again. He said he put a new CDM on it and ran it again and it did the same thing. Next, he is going to replace all three CDMs on the left side and run it again. Will let you know what happens. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emhammer.gif

Verify the GROUNDS for the CDM's on that side of the engine.
You could also have a stator with an intermittent "open" circuit (one stator winding per CDM on this engine). http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
Re: Mercury Mystery....Still blowing our minds!!!!!!!! (EuropeanAM)
I called him this evening and he was at the lake with my boat. He put 3 CDMs on the left side, a new one at #6 and two verified good CDMs at #2 and #4. He said it was running as good as it ever did. He started working on the hole shot, and said it was still sluggish out of the hole. He pulled the plugs and found that #3 and #4 were completely dry. He pulled #2 carb and found the needle seat had actually backed out and wasn't allowing the float to operate. After tightening that up and reinstalling the carb, he pulled to of the plugs out of the prop. I never pulled the plugs out of the prop because they already had holes in them. He says it is on plane in 50ft or less.
WOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!
Thanks to all you guys for helping me out with this boat. I will reserve the right to officially celebrate until I go get the boat and put it on the water. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/boardstuff2/beers.gif

David, what was clogging up the exhaust in it so bad that it had to be drilled out and cleaned up?
Re: Mercury Mystery....Still blowing our minds!!!!!!!! (NixaMan)
Not David.... but I can tell you it was CARBON and UNBURNT OIL. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
