250 Pro XS losing power + trouble getting on plane, please help.
I was out on the lake today and my 2008 Mercury 250 Pro XS would not put the boat on plane. It seemed bogged down and not enough power to get up on plane. I did have a full rear live well on my Ranger 621 which does add weight but never had a problem before. Once i finally got it on plane it ran fine but would not exceed 4,800 to 5,000 rpm WOT and trimmed up but then i would cut back on the throttle and the power band seemed to catch and it jumped up in power and RPM's to regular. Any idea's or suggestions? The motor is under warranty but curious to know what the cause might be? Bad open coil?
Thanks,
Tim

Sounds like a coil problem

If it ends up being a coil problem am i able to get the dealer to replace all coils or will they only replace the bad coil? Sure would be nice to get them all replaced at the same time to avoid problems in the future.

Check your fuel lines and primer bulbs. Look at this thread.

Ask your dealer to reference (and apply) Service Bulletin 2009-26. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

Don, Does this sound like a coil issue? After reading other posts on coils issues it sounds similar to my issue. It will start and idle but seems to have a miss. Put down the throttle and it seems boggy and doesn't have the power or RPM's to get boat on plane. After repeated attempts I can get the boat on plane but only get about 4,800 RPM's and intermittently it will jump power and RPM's but then drops back down. I was out on Lake Michigan when this happened but thankfully in good weather and only 3 miles from the boat landing.

This could be a coil problem.
Keep in mind, however, that you can get similar results from ANY of the following items:
-Spark plug
-Plug Wire
-Direct Injector
-Fuel Injector
Performing an "Auto Self Test, Plugs OUT of Cylinder Heads" is a good way to check for spark at all six plug wires (this is done on the Computer Diagnostic System). http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

Well got the results it did turn out to be a coil out on cylinder #5 was the problem. The shop is replacing all 6 coils per service bulletin so I should be back on the water shortly.
