Re: opti oil/ recommendation (jigginjeff)
Must be something new..I was told the premium plus is the oil to use on the Opti's.
and teh DFI oil was over rated
Re: opti oil/ recommendation (Bryan)
All the guys that I know who race 2 stroke engines have run strictly synthetic oil in the engines for years. They don't hold up for more than a few races, and tell me they don't hold up at all with conventional oil, they hate to pop an engine while racing. They really crank up the RPM'S in those motors. I started using Pennzoil synthetic for the last 8 years...used to be cheaper that Evinrude's or Merc's synthetic oils, but now it's the same price. I ran my 2000 model Ficht Ram engine for 1200 hours without a wrench touching it, and decided to buy a 2006 model Merc Opti in 2007 for my boat. I now have over 400 hours on it without a wrench touching it. May not be the oil, but I believe I will keep using the Penn. synthetic.

Exactly.. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
I think its just bad compressors but mercury probably won't admit it.Just like the shift shaft seal on the 3.0L Sport Master lower unit. Its been a pain in the butt ever since 98' and it still hasn't been fixed.

Re: opti oil/ recommendation (MisterE)
I'm not doubting what Mercury "Recommends"..But that doesn't mean you have to use it and that it will void your warranty if you don't use it.I'm just going by what i've used and still am using(Premium Plus).Plus what a 25yr Mercury Certified machanic has told me.
