Why so many problems with the 250 Pro xs
This is just a curiosisty question, I have an '08 175 Pro Xs and.....thank the Lord have not had an ounce of trouble out of it. I see over and over again guy's having coil and other problems with the big Pro Xs Mercs. Is it just a "nature of the beast" type of thing or what?

I've always heard it said, "you hear more about one bad motor than you do a thousand good motors."

IMHO Mercury made a very bad decision to have the coils made in China http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif No way a part like that needs to be on a piece of equipment that costs that much.

The "higher the number of engines in production".... the more engines there are to hear about.
With the 250 ProXS being one of the most popular engines (do a little research.... there's a TON of them out there), you're going to hear of more issues.
The same thing applies to the coils.... this same coil is used on MULTIPLE engines.... you hear more about it on the 250's simply because there are WAY MORE 250's out there on the water (and being a high-performance engine, they're pushing the limits regularly). http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

Update: a new coil part number was issued this week. No info on what it is, or what has changed. However.... I've ordered some. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif
The coil part numbers are now:
339-879984T00 (Multi-Strike Coil without plug wire)
339-879984T01 (Multi-Strike Coil WITH plug wire)

Bet these have turned some valued customers off . Too bad they didnt get on it sooner. Almost like them FICHT engines they put out for the customers to test and then waited too long to correct. No, I aint never buying non USA stuff but I sure understand the frustration all these guys have had.
Come on Merc. Get it right!!!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/USA1.gif

You know we hardly EVER had any issues with the single striking external coil driver coils!! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif

And to think... the change was made to "improve idle quality". http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eyes.gif
