Why so many problems with the 250 Pro xs

This is just a curiosisty question, I have an '08 175 Pro Xs and.....thank the Lord have not had an ounce of trouble out of it. I see over and over again guy's having coil and other problems with the big Pro Xs Mercs. Is it just a "nature of the beast" type of thing or what?

I've always heard it said, "you hear more about one bad motor than you do a thousand good motors."

The "higher the number of engines in production".... the more engines there are to hear about.

With the 250 ProXS being one of the most popular engines (do a little research.... there's a TON of them out there), you're going to hear of more issues.

The same thing applies to the coils.... this same coil is used on MULTIPLE engines.... you hear more about it on the 250's simply because there are WAY MORE 250's out there on the water (and being a high-performance engine, they're pushing the limits regularly). http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/wink.gif

Sorry, I just can't buy the fact there is more problems with this motor because there are more of them. I lost a coil after 10 hours has nothing to do with how many 250's are out there. Its because Mercury has not fixed the problem yet and heck they may not want to since they are expensive parts and it is a constant money maker for them. The problem is because it is a defective part on too many motors and they still have not solved it. Sorry Don and you help a lot of folks out here but the fact is the motor does have coil issues. Nothing worse than having a new motor and limping back to the ramp!

I love my ProXS when it is working properly - but I have had more problems out of this motor than any other engine that I have owned. All electrical related stuff.

Nothing major in terms of repair time, but it has kept me from getting back to the ramp twice. http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthdown.gif

Just think how PO'ed you would be if your new car made you "walk home" 2 times in the first year of ownership!

Hey I don't want to speak for Don here but I don't think he said that there hasn't been a coil problem! Merc is aware of it Don has even had a poll on it on this board. Maybe they need a new manufacturer or something but Don indeed is right in that by shear volume of the number of 250 XS's out there you will have more coil failures but again that being said Don never said that there hasn't been a "problem with the coils" Merc has been working on correcting it Merc may have to take another route and it indeed is frustrating but Don isn't defending the "home team here" just stating the facts IMO http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif

I totally agree that the failure rate on these coils is unacceptable.

However..... I don't think it's been any sort of a money maker for Mercury.... not only are they replacing defective coils under warranty... they're paying dealers diagnostic time, labor time, shipping parts, and it costs money to administer the warranty claims. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/eek.gif

I realize the warranty covers these coils but that does not last forever and then they charge for them and they are subject to go out at any time. Pretty good deal for Mercury

339-879984T00 (Multi-Strike Coil without plug wire)
339-879984T01 (Multi-Strike Coil WITH plug wire)

Bet these have turned some valued customers off . Too bad they didnt get on it sooner. Almost like them FICHT engines they put out for the customers to test and then waited too long to correct. No, I aint never buying non USA stuff but I sure understand the frustration all these guys have had.
