Never had any lower unit problems with my 91 XP200. So today I change my L.U. oil, and I notice fine metallic flakes on the drain plug..should I get out wallet, nitro, or vasaline...or maybe all three?

No, it's normal, unless you have some chunks in there, or an excessive amount of metal in the gearlube.
What was the color of the oil?
The oil was black.
Billy, I have th esam eoil. Dark is fine, just means no water is getting in. Fine particles (fine) on the drain plug are common. You are good unless your are having shifting trouble. Make sure to use all BRP/Bomb parts and fluids in her http://xs-s.com/zf/images/smile/emthup.gif
Thanks Kerry! Yep..I always use BRP stuff..I figure it's cheaper than a new motor.
BTW Look at my power pak question, and see what you think..
whiskers on the drain plug is normal, rub them with your fingers they should smear like graphite, chunks and ruff feelin pieces are not!
BRP oil black??? If it is then ya need to change more often. Crusty Jr jumped me when he saw mine that way!!! Change the L/U oil twice a year and should be no problems!
Here is my two cents.
When i was at school ,i remember the teacher saying that the noise ,when you move slowly from neutral to forward/back , the trac trac trac means money money money , (in service) .Could be this the cause?.
