Saw that on e-mail a couple of days ago. I've been told (not by a reliable source) that it can occur in deer that live mainly in swamp type areas where it's difficult to keep their hooves manicured on a hard surface. Don't know if it's true, but sounds like it may be a theory anyway.

We had a really really lazy horse that could always find a way into the grain bins.
His hoofs looked the same way if we didn't keep them trimed.
Some animals get lazy just like humans, and that is the result.
