1986 Evinrude 150 hp Regulator/Rectifier
I have a 1986 Evinrude 150 hp (E150STLCDC) and my regulator/rectifier is going out. I am not sure of the brand but it was installed about 1 1/2 years ago by a marine mechanic. Could there be any reason this only lasted 1 1/2 years? I also plan on changing this out myself this time and was wondering if the less expensive after market (Sierra, CDI) electrical parts are good enough or do they go bad and not last that long? Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ken

What tests have you done to determine the regulator is going out?

I have it a mechanic now, I don't know how he tested it. When I took it in the tach would work intermittently and sometimes not at all. My main cranking battery would also not keep a charge. I oringinally took it in because the last time I had it out the motor was surging when I got up on plane. Like it would be fine and then it would start slowing down like it was out of gas for a second and then it surge like it was getting a shot of gas. I still have not heard what was causing that.
Thanks

Yep, sure sounds like a regulator.

Would the regulator cause the motor to surge?
