My 1995 225 Evinrude (don't have serial # right now) is real hard to start after sitting a few weeks. After checking everything and pulling a hose from the back of the carb to check the enricher it seemed like the gas coming out was really oily. Much more than the 50:1 premix I have in a gas can.
I found that squirting some of that premix into the carbs will start it right up.
I've heard of VRO pumps failing, but can they go bad by not mixing the right oil to gas too?
You should have the same color fuel at the enrichener as you do the carbs. Yes it is possible for the oil side diaphragm to have a pin hole or two. The VRO mixes anywhere from 100:1 to 50:1 depending on the RPM at idle it is approx 100:1 as the RPM's increase oil flow is increased also up to 50:1. Make sure the red lever on your primer solenoid is point straight down that is the normal position. Also try a little bit of negative trim to assist in getting the fuel into the intakes.
Thanks ChampioNman. I was going to bypass the vro with a 2 gallon gas can filled with premix to see if the hard starting stops then decide if I need to replace it.
You still need the fuel pump side of the VRO to deliver the fuel. If you decide to bypass the oil side make sure you Cap off the oil inlet on the pump or you will damage the internals.
