Jacob, my Dad and I fished Ky lake Wednesday and Thursday out of New Johnsonville. We were looking forward to the trip as none of us have ever been down that far. We just can't seem to catch a break with our trips to Ky lake in regards to the weather.
Wednesday we had high winds which made fishing challenging but I was supprised that that end of the lake doesn't seem to be as rough. Surface temp that day was 64-67 and we caught lots of fish with about 12-14 solid 15-17" males and no big females. I caught most of mine on a strike king king shad swim bait. We fished the back of one creek where it was really deep and lots of clear water (6' visibility) was running in and Jacob had a blast catching fish on a spinnerbait. Fish were around wood on the flat in the back of that creek too. I was supprised we didn't catch any females that day. I did see one about 3lbs at the base of a bush in 1-2' that swam off and came back. Must have been getting ready.
Wednesday night we had strong storms and Thursday was again windy. The surface temp dropped to 61-63 over night and we didn't have a good outlook for the fishing. Much to our supprise the first bank we fished we caught 3 fat females 2 of which were 3+ and one 4lber. Didn't catch anything but shorts in the backs but the bigger fish were on the lead in bank up in 2-4' but had to be sitting in 7-9' to catch them.. We continued to run this pattern and ended up with 6 or 7 keepers with the best 5 around 18lbs. Not too bad for or second day on new water. All of these (except one on a bandit 200) were caught on t-rigged lizzards, tubes, and finess jigs w/ chigger craw.
We didn't slow down and fish much on Wednesday because of the wind so maybe that's why we didn't catch any females. Who knows! We did have fun fishing new water. It's a different lake down there for sure. I'll be back!
