Just wondering is there some points that need to be greased or is it just a matter of replacing the shift cable sometimes it's hard to get it into reverse or neutral never foward????

Al, pull the cowl and make sure the cable and linkage is engaging the shift interrupter switch. Could be a simple adjustment.

What type of engine do you have, faststrike or E-Tec?
The reason I asked is; some E-Tec's don't have the shift interrupt, my 2011 150 E-Tec don't have the shift interrupt swith. I have the same problem that you have and have not solved my problem as of yet. I think it may be in the cable. <not sure right now>
I have a 1991 Fastrike not an e-tec
And the 91 FS doesn't have a shift interrupt switch. Check the cable for end play as described in the video.

They did come out with a shift interrupter kit for the '91 and '92 motors, so look to see if one is installed. If not, it would be a good idea to get one.
If your idle is too high, the shifting out of gear will be difficult, that is why they came out with the kit. Try slowing your idle down by a click or two and make sure that QuickStart is not engaged due to a bad temp sensor of thermostat.
I guess a good question would be what is the idle RPM in gear? If you know your idle timing. If you have an external control box and there is a lot of play in the shift handle, it could be a worn selector gear. Don't try to shift with the Quikstart on, idle rpm is to high and hard to do and hard on lower units. 1/8 to 3/16 end play in cable, cable OK, follow instructions, in a real OEM service manual, on throttle and shift cable installation, I like the idle RPM to be around 750 in gear, 100 more than book, but I think it works better for the hesitation and poor idle. I replaced the selector gear and readjusted the cables, my 1991 150 Intruder shifts real good again. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif Oh yes, don't forget what Seahorse said to do.
