I recently purchased a bass boat that has a Johnson GT 175. The motor runs good the first time you start and run it. After fishing a while I will try to take off but the motor dies out. One time I hit the choke and it recovered and took off. The next time out it acted the same way so I hit the choke and it took off again. It seems as though there is a fuel supply problem and I am considering rebuilding the VRO fuel pump, does anybody have other ideas?
I'm assuming that you pumped the primer bulb?
I did pump the primer prior to taking off initially and after fishing for a few hours.
The last year for the GT 175 was in 1991. So look on the left hand side motor bracket about midway and look for a stick on tag that will have your motor information on it. I'd do a little more testing before tearing into the VRO.
The model number is J175STLESE. What other testing do you have in mind I should try?
I'd make sure I had a BRP primer bulb not a wally world special, Make sure the fuel filter is clean or replaced. Check all the fuel line hoses for splits. Hook a portable tank to eliminate the boat's fuel tank, etc.
I was planning to run it on a portable tank the next time so I can rule out the two gas fuel tanks. I also noticed that all the fuel lines are held on with wire ties and they are not really that tight, do you think it is possible that after the engine warms up that they are sucking air? I am going to replace them and put hose clamps on instead.
Ratchet clamps are best. You can over tighten worm drive hose clamps and break plastic fittings if not careful.
