nice deer,
are you sure he was making a scrape? it is still a litttle early, he could've just been pawing at the ground, nut hunting, anything..., but a scrape seems a little unlikely. put it is possible. the reason why i say this is look at his horns, velvet is all hormonal based, as is the rut when they scrape. He hasn't lost his velvet too long ago.... as for the pee in the scrape http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/ohwell.gif don't count on it working. this method will work sometimes with some people. Deer can't not relate an odd smell like that with humans. they relate a human smell with humans because we educate them by stomping around in their territory all the time. It was definitely a scrape. I thought it was too early as well but it had the licking branch broke off in three defined spots. The scrapes were probably 2.5' in diameter and all within 20 yards of each other. Now they were not ten yards from an oak tree and man they were hitting them nuts hard (I have opened the door Kyle but I first wanted to let you know I knew I opened the door with the last typed statement). As far as doing my business in the scrape, I was skeptical until I had two other people swear by it. I now will swear by it. That ole boy was throwing dirt everywhere and seemed as though he was doing a lip curl...? Nonetheless, my second deer with a bow and first buck with a bow I am pumped. I have passed on several 2-3 year old deer that just were not to their potential yet. This one still had a good couple years ahead of him but I just couldn't pass him up. Next year will mean higher standards now.

Had a 10 pointer come in last thursday evening with his nose almost up a does behind!!!! About a 120" deer, guessing a 2.5 year old. I couldn't believe it either but my woods is tore up with scrape right now, I can show anyone at least 6 within 100 yards of my house. September/Early October Scrapes are very common, and actually the deer experts say if your going to start a mock scrape to start it in late summer....

As for the scrape thing... I too have multiple scrapes on the property I hunt. I hung a few extra stands this past weekend and found them fresh from that morning. I've also heard of people having luck with peeing in scrapes... lets face it, it can't hurt anymore than that deer urine some people buy in stores... who knows what is in that.

as for you kyle, ive forgotten more deer than you've killed. i think a couple of guys on here can vouch for that. if theres anything i have a clue about its white-tails. i never said they were scrapes, just so unlikely just like everyone else is surprised to see them so early.......and yes...the bengals suck

As far as peeing in a scrape, yes this does work. All the buck knows is another Male urinated in HIS scrape. They dont know it was a human, or any other animal.
Take this for what its worth, In over 30 years of hunting deer, I have NEVER had a buck react to doe in heat scent. however i have had some decent results with Buck urine. This corralates with similar experiences from my friends in the filming industry.(Drurys. Stoltz,kiskys, etc.) I have gone to using buck urine only.
As for the early scrapes I have seen this several times, although rare it does happen, You had a fairly large, but younger animal that wants to get on with the rut.
Defination of the rut= "From the time a deer looses his velvet till the time he sheds his antlers a buck is in rut."
We as hunter always refer to the rut when we seer deer making scrapes, chasing does, etc. This is actually the "peak of the rut"
