225 HO over heating (pre E-Tec)

I'm getting a hot alarm on my 225 HO at around 4000 rpm. The engine idles fine and will jump out of the hole no problem but once I trim up and reach 4k the hot alarm comes on. It pumps water no problem, the screen and tell tale are clean, and my water pressure is between 8-10 on my factory guage (2005 Ranger 521.) I have owned the boat and motor since new and havent had much work done beside an ignition coil in 09, and I change the plugs and fuel filter every year. Boat ran fine before I put it away in October, and havent really run it much this year due to having our first baby. At 4k rpm I am running about 40 mph give or take. I have no temp guage so no idea how hot its getting. Any help would be greatly appriciated.

When was the last time you put a water pump in it? 8-10 PSI is that at Idle or at speed? If it is at speed you need to install a pump. You should be over 18 PSI running at normal speed.

I had a pump put in before last season, but i'm sure it could use a new one. My water pressure is at 10 psi while at speed, I didnt think to look at what it was at idle speed. I guess its time for question number 2, how hard is it to replace the water pump on your own? I am mechanically inclined, I've just never gotten deeper into this motor than plugs and filters. It is fairly easy. There is a link on the top of the forums to give you a step by step titled john rude tips. Yes the motor needs to be above 18 PSI at running speeds 8-10 is way too low for your HO. I like to see them in the 20+ range. ~$60 and your time.

Same motor, my pressure was 12psi at WOT and I was told that is the lowest to let it get at WOT. In all actuallity it was almost impossible to get it any higher than that no matter where the motor was set. I think it was in the design of the intakes. When my original lower unit flew apart I put on a newer lightning case from BRP it was around 2005ish and my water pressure was much higher, It has 4 water intakes per side where the 2001 case had three.

I'm going to replace the pump this week I hope. I'm not affraid to take things apart but luckily my friends brother is a marine mech and willing to help me. I was thinking about the boat lastnight and remember that I used to run around 16psi at wot. I'll keep everyone posted.

Replacing the pump should take care of it. Mine is a 2002 HO and I run 10 to 12 at WOT more or less depending on trim. 5 to 6 at idle. These have been my readings since new and on each new pump installed.
A couple of years ago, first time on the lake in the spring, when accelerating up to about 5000 RPM, hot alarm went off. Still running 10 PSI at higher RPMs. After cool down began experimenting going up in speed very slowly. Somewhere between 4500 and 5000 RPM water pressure would drop to zero. If I slowed down, water pressure would go back up.
Owned Rudes since 85 and this was the first time I had this type of issue. Installation of new pump assembly cured it.

It's like I always say, Bass boats and Shallow water boats can never get too many water pump changes! I like to see the DI engines in the 18-20 psi range at wot. I like to see the e-tecs at at least 15-18 psi range. Remember, PSI guages can read differently from one manufacturer to another and a little "muck" can reduce the readings or increase the readings. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif
