I replaced and recarpeted the bunks on my trailer and it looks great. But I drilled the holes for the 3/8 lag screws too large and they are not staying tight. I know I can repossiton and redrill the bunks. Before I take that route, it there any kind of shim or filler I could put in the holes and then put the lag bolts back in? I looked at using bigger lag bolts, but the next size in 1/2 inch and I would have to redrill the trailer brackets. Thanks, Ed
I think I'd put some marine epoxy in the holes, and snug the bolts. Should hold when it cures.
If that doesn't work, try flipping the bunks around or swapping sides. I know a guy who did about the same thing once http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/embarassed.gif and, umm...HIS boat had different overhang front to back so the holes were in different places. Drill new holes and you are good to go. I'd fill the old holes with a sealer if you go this route.
Fill the holes with a piece of dowel using exterior glue or construction adhesive and redrill after it has time to dry.
I never drill a pilot hole, I just use an 18V drill with a good extension and screw em up in.
yep drill out the hole larger and then put a dowel in with super strength epoxy
redrill and you are good to go
I had plenty of bunk board length so I moved the bunks up an inch and redrilled the pilot holes for the lag screws unsing a much small bit. I think that will work. At least for now the lag screws are tight. I filled the old holes with waterproof wood glue. Those hole are under the trailer bracket. Ed
