The spring goes onto the short side of the valve. The longer side goes into the head as it keeps the valve from popping out of the grommet as the water pressure compresses the spring, moving the valve away from the cylinderhead.

Thanks seahorse.... The picture in the parts breakdown isn't real clear but I thought it looked like the spring went on the short side... Maybe those fellows at that ralley are drinking a little too much.... Many Thanks
