1979 evinrude 150 hard to start cold or hot

I have had this boat for almost 6 months now and it has never been right since I bought it. I had the carbs cleaned and new plugs put it, compression checked out at 110 across all 6 and I just rebuilt the fuel pumps (bc I saw a post on here about the same motor being hard to start) and still have yet to figure out my problem. When its cold The motor trys to crank and willthen lean sneeze and quit after a few times but after fooling with it choking it you can get to crank and run. Then once you get it warmed up it gives the same issues but is just a lot harder to get running. The first time I put the boat on the water it was running 5900-6000 with a 23 pitch prop so I went up to a 24 pitch raker to bring the rpms down a touch and get a lil more speed and now it wont turn over 4900 at wot. I have replaced the fuel line and primer bulb and checked the chokes and throttles to make sure they are both open and closing as they should im not sure if these two probs are related just looking for an idea cuz im out. You don't say what boat you have, but I would be very surprised if you could turn a 24 Raker any more RPM than that, hole shot must be very slow. Synk and link of the timing and carbs must be spot on. Do you give the motor any throttle while trying to start? You had to do that with most of these motors.

If I give it ANY throttle at all it wont ever crank lol. And the boat is a 18 ft ebbtide dynatrak. With a 23 p aluminum prop it was turning 6000 so I figured the 24 would only drop it to about 5600? When im cranking it early in the morning I have to spin it over and then hit the choke and usually takes a few times of this toget it to crank.

Sorry just re read your post and my hole shot actually feels pretty good is that motor just to old to push a 24p on a boat that size?

The 24 Raker, by blade design, is harder to turn than most 24 pitch props.

Pump the primer ball until firm, set the fast idle level, push the key switch in for about ten seconds, continue to hold the key in while cranking your engine.

I like the old 3 blade Turbo props. A 22 pitch Turbo 1 or 2 that has not be reworked, should work good for you. Maybe a 24 would work also. You should be able to pick one of these up fairly resonable. You can still buy these props new.

I just had a thought about the hard to start. The exhaust relief holes, at the rear of the motor just below the belly pan, must be out of the water when you try to start. Trim the motor up untill the holes are out of the water.

Well sorry it took so long to post back,but I checked the exhaust relief holes and I dont think I could trim it down far enough for them to be in the water. Anybody know of a GOOD mechanic I could take it to that would actually try to fix my prob and not just throw partd at it woud be of great help thanks
