what would you do

Hey guys, I'm not a hunter but thought I'd browse over to this forum and post this question for your input and suggestions...here's the situation. My wife and two young kids got home tonight about 5:45 to find a guy in camo holding a rifle and standing over a deer at the top of my driveway. I live in the county, not city limits, but we're also in a large residential neighborhood. It just happens that my yard is at the end of a cul-de-sac that backs up against woods. My wife was very upset about the deer and the stranger in the yard with a gun. He asked if he could leave the deer there and go get his truck. She said, "uh, OK but what are you doing here..." He said he killed the deer in the woods but not on our property.

She called me...I was on way home so I called my next door neighbor to go talk with him and also called the sheriff. It turns out he lives two steets over (I saw his truck as he was leaving and followed him home.) He left me a nice puddle of blood to clean up at the top of my driveway and some freaked out kids.

So I told the sherriff "nevermind" since he lives in the neighborhood. I also called Wildlife but they sounded like they could give a fat rats a$$. So what would you have done? My next door neighbor told me he chewed him out for dragging that deer through my yard...

Thanks for any input. Like I say I'm not a hunter but still a lifetime outdoorsman in my state...

I don't blame you for being upset. A grown man should know better than to do that. Maybe you should go over there and tell him you didn't appreciate him dragging a deer through your yard and leaving a puddle of blood in the driveway.

Not what I would have done. I wouldn't drag a dead deer through someone's yard without first having permission. Unless it died there then he may have been waiting to make sure he had permission to go on your land to get it. If he killed it and then drug it up through your yard and left it on your driveway that is bad taste. I can see why your wife was freaked out.

Nope wouldn't flinch at all. Seems pretty obvious he was just looking for the shortest possible drag but he didn't use the best judgement in this situation. Other than a friendly chat to explain that you and your family aren't into blood and guts, I don't know what else you CAN do. I certainly wouldn't have called the authorities and their response is about what I'd expect. Other than a possible trespass, it doesn't sound like he violated any laws.

Sorry that happened that way, but if he shot the deer on ajoining property and it died in your yard, what else was he to do? I do agree it was in bad taste to be sittin there with a rifle and a dead deer in your driveway, but if i shot one id track it to where it died, at least he found it and didnt leave it rottin in your yard. Just my 2 cents, hes probably not a bad guy, just a wierd situation.

Completely agree with that. Probably wasn't thinking and just wanted to get it out of the woods and home as quick as possible.

If this hunter tracked the deer to your property after he shot it thats one thing, but if he was dragging the animal through your property that to me is unacceptable. Although I dont hunt anywhere close to anyones home I cant imagine dragging a deer through someones yard or down there driveway.

My guess is the best thing the hunter could have done was, leave the deer in the woods. Determine the shortest drag distance. Go get his vehicle, come back and ask permission to drag the deer across your property and then go get his deer. If no one was home at your house then he should have asked a neighbor if he could use their property.

Well, I'm not sure about the laws in NC, but technically he is trespassing if he didn't get permission to come on your property. Aside from that, he made a pretty big error in judgment by coming on the land with a gun and leaving blood for you to clean up, not mentioning the fact that the kids got an eyeful of it. Regardless of where he shot it, he needed to talk to you BEFORE crossing your property. the shortest way isn't necessarily the best way.

That was just plain stupid. Even if I absolutely had to do something similar (and it would be a "had to" situation) I would drag the deer back to the nearest property I had permission to be on, leave my gun in the woods, clean up any blood on me and then go find a landowner to talk to. After dark, I admit, I would be apprehensive to approach someone's house in an upscale neighborhood and make that request, even if the deer had expired in your yard. I probably would have left it and called a wildlife officer or the sheriff's dept. myself if I couldn't get the deer back to what I know is safe ground without being seen. Because I would expect a confrontation. Hunting in populated areas has challenges. He don't sound very good at it.
