TREE STAND MESSAGE

My oldest son has a broken back because he didn't follow safety rules and because he tried to save a couple dollars.

Logan's in a lot of pain but in great shape considering. He was putting up a deer stand Wed. afternoon to get ready for opening weekend. He had left the ratchet straps in a freinds truck, so he went and bought some new straps from Freds. They stated they were rated for 750 lbs. Logan put up 2 stands on the same tree with 2 straps per stand for safety. When he stood on the second stand the hooks on both straps straightend out and he and the stand fell 17' to the ground. He called me on my cell phone as soon as he was able. I was in my truck driving home from work and I was able to get to him within 10 min. As soon as I got to him and talked to him for a min, I got the rescue squad and an ambalance on the way so we could get him on a board and out of there.

I hope everyone I can get the message to will do what I warned my son to do just 3 days be fore the accident. IF YOU GET IN A TREE HAVE A SAFETY HARNESS ON.

Also DON'T TRUST YOUR LIFE TO SOME CHEAP ASS MADE IN CHINA RACHET STRAPS FROM FRED'S .

I agree with the tree harness advice. I'm getting better in that dept. especially since getting a vest and lineman's belt--so much more convenient to use than the old style.

Sounds like he has grounds for a lawsuit to cover some bills. Have you talked to a lawyer?

WOW Scott i hate to hear that about Logan....i hope he gets better.....i have fallen once putting a stand up...i was lucky it was only about a 10' drop...but still severly sprained my ankle and was in a lot of pain and still fight it sometimes....but im still alive and learned my lesson the hard way.....i never step 1 foot up a tree without having some type of harness on they say 1 in 3 hunters will fall at some time in their hunting life...its not something to take a chance on ever

Good advice on the harness! I have known three people I know fall, one about two weeks ago, fell hanging a stand and broke his legs, one wrist and an ankle. I hang my stands from 25 to 30 feet and do not want to fall, I always wear my harness now, I have made some ropes that I use for climbimg up and down my stand so I am always connected and have been making a few and giving them to my friends as well. It isn't worth a broken back to save a few bucks or a few seconds.

Todat was opening day and I knew where to set up on 3 different shooters. I didn't even go. This has put a damper on it for me.

I took down the climbing sticks Sunday morning, but I did take my youngest son out Sunday afternoon. I put his harness on him before we walked away from the truck.
