1997 Johnson 150 FastStrike Help
Model # BJ150GLEUE
I took my boat out four times this past week and the first two times the motor ran perfectly fine. The last two times, the motor did not want to start. It acted like the motor was not getting gas when I was turning over the motor. I pulled off the cowling and took off the plastic cover over the carburetors and turned the motor over a few times and saw gas dripping out of the thing that I am pointing to in the picture. I wiggled that part and turned the motor over and it started right up and ran fine the rest of the day. I had to do the same procedure the next morning and the motor ran fine for the rest of the day.
My question is what is that part and what would cause it to make the motor not get gas?
Thanks in advance.

On my old boat that is where I would attach the hose off my fogging oil can for winterizing the motor. I never saw gas in that area.

That is the maintenance valve called a shraeder valve. Inspect it closely for hairline cracks. You can check it while in that position by pressing on the ignition key in the on position. Look for fuel escaping. If so you can replace the valve and O ring that is on the internal end of the valve. It is placed in its normal running position. It can be used for spraying engine tuner or fogging oil.

I looked at it today and found a crack on the red plastic part. The Schraeder valve pulled out, but I don't know how to take off the red part. Also, what would that red part be called so I know what to order to fix it?
Thanks for the replies.

Boats.net calls it a Maintenance Valve Assembly. They have good OMC parts diagrams. Go to http://www.boats.net, follow the links for your motor, and look at item 50 on the diagram marked "Fuel Bracket and Components". I tried to post a URL direct to it, but the URL was too long and it wouldn't post correctly.

Loosen the 4 screws that hold the top of the primer solenoid cap, lift it up about 1/4" and the valve will come right out. Order a new O ring while you are at it. Your gasket is the new brown style so that is OK.
