Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord
I have a Fortrex 101 and its only a couple years old and the release cord has broke on me 3 times already!! I went to Lowes and bought 3 ft of plastic coated steel cable and replaced the "shoestring" used in my trolling motor. For a $1300 dollar trolling motor, MinnKota needs to come up with a more durable release cord system... So far the steel cable cord is working great...

I've read some guys using plastic coated cable with good results... I would imagine there has to be a burr or something causing the multiple failures. Regardless the cable would be a good fix.
Re: Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord (Shocker)
Thats the thing, I've replaced the whole cord twice and it has broke twice at the handle and once where it goes into the trolling motor. I think the coated steel cable will solve it...
Re: Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord (09RangerZ520)
Broke mine, less than 1 year old ..... the cords definitley are "less than top quality" but, I noticed mine was in serious need of lubrication. Get 'em lubed up and it takes much less effort to deploy/stow. Cords, new or replaced should last much longer.

Did mine with a plastic coated cable and used the crimp to secure each end. Looks good too.
Re: Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord (09RangerZ520)
ive got the same trolling motor, same problem..... ive bought it in april and its broke twice. i dont want to use coated cable im sure the coating will wear off too. army navy stores sell some rope that is thin enough to use and very heavy duty. I am going to try this with a little bit of lubricant spray every other trip. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/thumbsup2.gif

I know your frustration, I went to pull mine up in a hurry when mine broke. The end result was me swimming in the water. Not so funny http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/mad.gif
Re: Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord (09RangerZ520)
cable works really well but the casing tears pretty easily then rubs raw spots on the mount...if you know an electrician or someone in construction see if they have a piece of Mule Tape and that should solve the problem.
Re: Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord (09RangerZ520)
Go by a small engine shop and ask for 4 ft of pull cord. They have it on a roll so its only a few $.
Re: Fortrex Trolling Motor Cord (brs2149)
Another easy fix is to go to a west marine or similar store and get the cording that they use to rig sailboats can't remember the size I got, but it has lasted thru two different trolling motors and has no signs of wear what so ever.
