Organizing Carolina Rigs

If you like to throw Carolina Rigs like I do, a lot of valuable fishing time can be lost when you break-off and have to retie, not 1, not 2 but 3 knots!!! Tying your leaders ahead of time can save you time, but only if you can keep them from getting hopelessly tangled! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/mad.gif http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif Here is a method that I have found is perfect for me. Hopefully it can help you as well.

It's as simple as 1-2-3!

1st, tie your Carolina Leader as you normally would using a barrel swivel and the hook and line of your choice. You can tie 10 to 15 during the commercials of your favorite football game!

2nd, carefully place your new Carolina leader in a "ZipLoc" sandwich bag. Seal the zipper top and then take time if necessary to label the bag with a Sharpie on the white area provided with the appropriate information such as length of leader, type of line, size of hook etc.

3rd and finally take all of the leaders you have tied which are now nice and neatly stowed inside individual Ziploc sandwich bags which you have labeled and place them in one LARGE Ziploc STORAGE Bag. Press on the bag to let the air out, pull the zipper and you are done!

Now store them in your boat. I put mine on the bottom of my rod locker so they are easy to get to and I don't have to go through the rest of my tackle to find them. The next time you go Carolina Rigging you will be able to open the storage bag, sort through the labeled leaders you have already prepared and pull one out that is tangle free and ready to tie on and catch a "BIGUN"!!

I've been using Carolina ....shit. Can't remember the name, but it's a little super hard plastic/rubber-y round thing with a slit cut in it. Using a pair of needle-nosed pliers to clamp down on this little guy, the slit opens enough to pass the line through.

This way, you tie only one knot! I've hung this thing on rocks, trees, etc. and it does not slip...at all!

It's kinda like using a splitshot instead of a swivel, only....not really...and better.


However, I love your idead of pre-tying these suckers!

That little gismo is called a Carolina Keeper. I've been useing those for a few years now. It allows you to quickly change the length of your leader and is easy to adjust up a little if you have to retie your hook. The only disadvantage would be for those that like to use different lines for their leaders and main line.

I have used the Carolina keepers as well but as you say you cannot use a different leader type then your regular line. Also I use a 1 ounce weight a lot and I have always had to have two of them on the line to keep them from slipping.

I think your pre-tying idea is pretty slick, for sure.

I use a wine cork, wrap the line around the cork, position the swivel and then stick the hook point in it and then just point it in my hook box. I only carry a couple of spares so this works pretty well for me. Not to mention the possibilities for a pickup line " say, care to help me drain this bottle of wine so we can tie some Carolina rigs???".......................................... .. or maybe not http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/Laugh.gif

A friend of mine showed me his idea. Take a "Noodle" water float and cut it about 6" to 12". Stick a toothpick(s) into the float and thread the untied eye of the swivel onto the toothpick and just role it and stick it. You can fit lots of leaders on one section of noodle.

Greatest thing I've found for storing premade Carolina Rig leaders...

They make a 6 and a 12...I've always done fine with a 6...

Try the Tackel Tamer above, they have em at BPS, Grander Mtn, and Calbels. They work great, open up end to store extra beads, etc. Sell for about $5.00. Had one for 10 years and still going strong, works for re tired drop shotsl also. http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/smile.gif
