the only cost should be the lights, all else is labor...here are pics of the nav lights i did...hardest part was the nerve to make the first cut...let me know if i can help...jimmy

There used to be a video on youtube where a guy pulled his rub rail off and drilled holes for a strip of LED's to fit in. The ones he used were a different design than the ones recently posted on BBC. They were raised sealed LED units about 1/2" apart. He drilled a gillion holes and had UV leds all the way down each side.
I tried to find the video, but I think it has been taken down by the poster.

Ok thanks. That is cool how you got the rub rail with the lights in it already. I was not wanting to spend that much money. I was looking at superbright leds.com and found some black light bars. I guess is all i need is the bars and a switch? I can get the wires and connectors at the house. Thanks

There is 48 LED's per 20" module. Like most LED's, they draw mili-amps. Since you are receiving a complete rubrail insert, it only makes sense to outfit the entire boat with UV lighting. This elimates most "blind-spots" and provides a large field of coverage.
I am wondering, is inside of the rub rail hollow to where i could snake the wires to the batteries from the front of the boat? That away I wouldnt have to take it off. I could just make my cuts and insert the led strips.

pretty vague answer. they could be drawing a million milliamps. how many milliamps does each 20" section draw? do you know?

There are approximately three hundred (300) miliamps per 20" module.
what if my rub rail has a rope in it how do you go bout put in a new rub rail

Not a problem..... It is replaced with the manufacturer's plastic tube version of the rope with the lights recessed into that.

There is a small channel, or space, (depending on the rubrail style) but that would be way more work than just pulling the insert, doing the work you want to, and then reseating it.

How hard is re seating it? I never have messed with rub rails much. Would i need a glue or silicone to set it back in right?
