I am wanting to do my Triton 186 carpet, not looking forward to the process but what I cant figure out is this. You have to keep it running the same direction to keep colors the same. If your carpet is as wide as your boat, once you do your side and under lids, dont you have a lot of wasted carpet that cant be used? Or do you do the big stuff first then tackle the lids with the scraps. I want to use the BassCat carpet but have no idea on how much to order with out wasting half of it. Thanks
On a 19 foot boat< you should order about 25 ft of carpet. there will be small strips that get tossed, but youshouldn't have too much waste. I usually remove all the lids, start with the front deck and work my way back. make sure the grain is all running the same direction. good luck, take your time, It'll be worth it.
I did the front deck, bottom, and the back first. I took a sharpie and drew arrows on the backing of the carpet every so often to keep the grain running the same. I found it very helpful to mark the underside of my lids with an arrow pointing towards the front, so i knew to match up the arrows to keep the grain right. Try and tear up the existing carpet in one piece so you'll have a pattern to go by.
You are going to have waste, it's just the nature of the beast. I did have some scraps that were used to do a couple of the smaller lids such as cooler lid, and the two livewell lids.
The hard part is the prep, the laying of the carpet is the easier part.
Don't shortcut the prep work, makes a better end result.
another little tip, get yourself a few c clamps or spring clamps. Cut a few pieces of plywood 3/4" x the length of the lid flanges. I used the clamps and the wood to hold down the carpet to the underside of the lids while the glue dried. Keeps all the carpet even. I had enough pieces and clamps to do 5 lids at a time, it REALLY cut down my restore time.

Like he said ,I did mine ordered 30 ' for a 20'.5" 1998 205 hydra sport had scraps left.

In carpeting and upholstery its like cutting meat there is always scrapes. 35 yrs in the business.
If you order from basscat they usually send you extra,,I ordered 26' and got 30' and they said 7' wide it was closer to 8'
I wasnt worried about the scraps left over I just wanted enough to do it and not be wasteful in the manner in which I started doing it, esp with the pattern having to run in the same direction. I was planning on getting it from BassCat. Thanks
