keeping slicone under rubrail from driping onto ground

so my boat is almost ready for water but there is a little gap under the rub rail that I am trying to fill with black 3m 5200. It has the same gap as before I took the whole thing apart and it had silicone filling in the gap before. I am using the old rubrail it still looks ok. Maybe I should have bought a different style rubrail but funds are pretty much gone for this boat for now. My problem is: I fill in the gap and the 5200 sags down drips onto the ground in a few places. Most of it looks good but seeing the few crappy parts ruins the whole thing and is pissing me off. Can you run a strip of wide masking tape underneath the rub rail attached to the hull? Then use either this http://www.harborfreight.com/media/c...mage_16946.jpg or a few large C clamps attached to the rub rail to let the 5200 cure? Don't take long for it to tack up.

i think the tape would hold it up there.. I will check to see if a clamp will squeeze the rail closer but I think its pretty tight already.. do you think the tape will get stuck on the silicone to where I cant scrub it off?

I think if you make an angle with the tape with half on the hull and the other half on the rub rail, you wouldn't get any seepage. You only need a small bead on the rail. Then uses several C clamps with a strip of wood to dissipate the stress on the rail and to give it even coverage in pressure. Once it cures then you can just peel off the tape from the hull and rail and if needed use a razor blade or Exacto knife to remove the excess.

Just a thought but have you tried non-stick alum foil or use 3m painter blue tape and shape the area/contour tap and glue on stick to side of boat and underside of rub rail. Maybe have someone work the tape as your running the bead?
Just thoughts..
