Re: Painting Trailer Fenders (98rangerdvs)
Are they too far gone to wet sand?
If I was to repaint them I would call Ranger and get the same gel-coat to redo.
I am not a big fan of auto paint on glass, gel coat is not that bad to spray just a little more sanding but will last many more years.
Tell your buddy he can order Duratec (sp) and cut it 1 to 1 and it will lay like auto paint. Also you wouldn't have to clear it if you didn't want to just wet sand and compound and buff. The Duratec will put the gloss in it.
I am no expert but I have been laying gel coat on my Basscat project and I have never painted anything and it's looking great. Just a bunch a sanding! http://www.bassboatcentral.com/smileys/mad.gif
Re: Painting Trailer Fenders (totalbeverage)
Unfortunetly there are chips, and spider cracks etc...all through the fenders so they need more than just a little tlc to get them looking good....as for the gel idea I will ask him about it...thanx
Re: Painting Trailer Fenders (98rangerdvs)
I just redid my fenders and mine too had spider cracks and the metalflake was actually sticking out where you could feel it. I thoroughly sanded them with100 grit on a DA sander and sprayed them with a product called FEATHER FILL, it a polyester primer surfacer that fills all the imperfections. THEN i SANDED THEM WITH 220 GRIT. Then i used a good automotine primer sanded with 320 and then a good automotive eurathane paint.I have painted boats wih this type of paint for years and never a problem with the paint holding up.
Re: Painting Trailer Fenders (garanger)
I will show him how you did yours. I feel pretty confident in this guy since he has been doing this for about 15 years and does all kinds of show car work..pretty impressive painter..
