Voltage regulator problem?
I have a 1991 150 hp model ELEIS (60 degree) all original. I have a question should the voltage gauge read 15 volts when running above 3500 rpm and then settled to 13.5 volts after you have run for a while above 3500 rpm? It never exceeds 15 volts and it seems the when the battery is fully charged the time it takes for the voltage to drop from 15 volts to 13.5 volts is less. Is this normal?

First hook up a digital voltmeter directly to the battey posts, not cables, and monitor it and compare it to your dash gauge while running.

I connected a digital voltmeter to the battery and I got the same reading. It was doing the samething. My voltage regulator is original with the purple wire.

Re: Voltage regulator problem? (kro)
Well, it sure sounds like a voltage regulator. In addition, get the service manual and the special flywheel removal-install tool and inspect the stator on a motor that old. I have a feeling that you will find a pool of melted insulation underneath the stator. Figure on both items being replaced.

Thanks Seahorse. I guess an output of 15 volts even for a limited time is a problem. Are there any other symptoms of a bad stator? the motor has 395 hrs. and runs great. I am the original owner.
