HELP! Steering replacment questions!
I broke my steering cable over the weekend and I am going to try and replace it myself with a new steering system. I am looking at buying a a complete system and I am not sure what to buy. My boat is an 1977 16 foot fiberglass bass boat with a 85 Evinrude on the back. I do not need hydraulic steering and I want to do this a inexpensively as possible, but I am not sure on what I should buy. Do I need a non feed back steering system? Can I use this type from Cabelas?

You don't need an NFB system, but from everything I have read on them, they are great at eliminating/decreasing steering torque. What type system is on the boat now? Some of the systems allow you to change just the cable, not the helm and everything. That will save some money.

I replaced the steering on my brothers 88 procraft with the NFB. It was real easy. Both of those you mentioned will work. I wouldn't try to just replace just the cables because its allot easier and probably cheaper to get the whole setup. Just make sure it is long enough. You may need to get a new steering wheel also. If you don't plan on replacing the steering wheel, try to pull off the old one before you order. Depending on the steering wheel, it may break when you go to pulll it off even if you use the right tools.
Shop around. You can beat Cabelas prices.
